The female seeemed genuinely happy to be asked, and Atlas was slightly surprised how quickly she accepted.
"You're... you're not just joking around are you..?"
Atlas tilted his big head, his brows crumpled in confusion at Kairis' question. Joke? No he did not joke.
"Of course not. I don't joke. I can get twice as much information with a second nose to the ground, and since you were skilled enough to take note and remember the scent here, you will be most helpful."
"Thank you Atlas.." She said, looking so beautiful when she said it. Atlas felt his tongue become dry and a feeling inside him felt like his guts were spasming. His legs felt weak.
Perhaps this was not such a great idea after all, he thought, if these feelings she inspired persisted . . .
Nonsense.
He was stronger than that, feelings alone could not budge him. Or so he told himself.
He breathed deeply. He shrugged away the bothersome feelings as best he could and turned to the trail. If they stayed parallel of one another, walking and sniffing, they would surely catch a trace of which way the old trail led. Atlas suddenly thought of all Kairis' critisim.
"Are you sure you want to assist me? With all your anti-alpha talk I might think you were opposed to finding the traitors."
He asked to remind her of his ultimate mission, and make sure she knew what she was aiding in, but deep down in Atlas' core, a core he seldom acknowlegded, He desperately wanted Kairis to join him.

"Are you sure you want to assist me? With all your anti-alpha talk I might think you were opposed to finding the traitors."
his words struck her hard and the white female paused. She cursed herself for even opening her mouth in the first place... she knew a wolf like Atlas surely would not forget such a statement like that. She had insulted his pack and her tail lowered slightly and she looked away.
"I promise I won't get in the way, and yes I know of the consequences that these wolves must face and I know the importance of your job, and I respect that." Kairis spoke easily and looked at Atlas, his frame was about double the size of her and his shadow loomed over her like a ghost. Her grren eyes sought out the trail and she stood up shaking the dirt and dust that stuck to her off. It was a shame her coat was white, it took three times the amount of cleaning than most wolves. Kairis was naturally a very clean wolf, but at the same time did not care too much for the cleaning prosess as it occupied too much of her time.
She moved swiftly over to Atlas and tilted her head to the right, wondering on if they were going to set out on their journey now and how far he planned on travelling in one day. She sented the ground and as she walked she bumped her leg on a fallen tree, bringing back memories of the scars she had aquired on her front left leg and how well they were hidden from the world by the fur on her leg... She breathed out and then glanced over her shoulder at Atlas. Her gut twisted and she closed her eyes. She could not aquire feelings for him. she would NOT aquire feelings for the beta male... heartbreak was something she was not fond of.

"I promise I won't get in the way, and yes, I know of the consequences that these wolves must face and I know the importance of your job, and I respect that."
Atlas thought her answer was a good one, and he decided that perhaps he could trust her. It would'nt be extremely smart of her to try and betray him anyway, he was much bigger than she was. He could see Kairis was not stupid. She was in fact, a lovely, beautiful, charming . . .
ATLAS!
It was his training, kicking the Kairis thoughts away.
THE MISSION. THE GOAL. THE TRAITORS.
He shook his head quickly, and stood up.
"Very Good, then. The strongest concentration of scent is about here. We will split and travel parallel about 25 lengths apart, so we can still hear and see each other. Keep your nose to the ground, and if you catch the scent of another wolf, or if this trail suddenly becomes stronger, let me know by barking or howling. At times there may be quite a bit of foliage between us, so make it loud."
He looked around, thinking. Giving some orders had made him feel better, more in his right state of mind. He turned and started off, trotting and motioning for Kairis to follow beside him.
"We'll continue on until it gets dark, then we'll hunt. The next morning we'll start off again, just as before. If at anytime you feel your time would be better spent on something else, feel free to go, with my thanks."
He moved away at the right distance, still in veiw of her, and began tracking the scent of the unknown wolf.
"If you need anything-" He said loudly, too embarrassed to finish.
((OCC: ah, poor misguided Atlas...anyway just wanted to add that the unknown wolf, i'm thinking it should be Rebus...))

Her pink tounge flopped out of the side of her mouth as she panted a bit. Her eyes, ears and nose were alert as she listened to what Atlas had to say. Its seemed like a good routine to follow so she nodded her head daintily and stood up to follow Atlas. Slowly she shifted away to his right and trotted along beside him at the distance of 25 lengths, from here she could here him call to her that if she she needed anything.. but then his words cut off so she guessed that if she needed anything to just call? The black nose of her was soon resting about five inches from the ground as she moved along at a swift pace, the foliage getting thicker between the two of them and Kairis stopped and paused when she lost sight of the male. Her ears folded back against her skull and her face filled with worry until she saw the brown and white fur color a distance in front of her through a gap in the trees.
She raced forwards until she was even with Atlas and she looked at him and smiled before leaping forwards into a run as she wound her way around the trees and at some points had to crawl on her belly under bushes and tight spaces. In fact, it was when she was crawling under a thick bunch of bushes that she smelled the sent of a strange wolf. She stopped and scratched at the ground and the sent seemed to get stronger and she raked at the ground with her black talon like claws. Kairis thought that the wolf must have taken the exact route she was following because from what she could tell she was right on top of the sent. Deciding that sher had to move, the female wiggled and squirmed to find that she was .... stuck.
Embarrased she called to Atlas with a loud howl and then continued to wiggle around and twist in hopes of freeing herself from the nasty grasp of the gree foliage as it clung to her white coat and held her pinned.
"Atlas!" she called in hopes that he would be able to follow her voice as the female felt like digging a hole and hiding her face in it. What a stupid move.... she sighed and thought of how ridiculous she must look, stuck and helpless.

Atlas started out on the supposed trail, estimating he'd have to sacrifice quick pace for the help of Kairis' nose. But to his pleasant surprise, she kept up very well, and he attempted increasing the pace several times and found that she still kept his pace. He slowly began to stop worrying about her, as he increasingly became confident in her abilities.
Several hours into their trek, he could faintly hear a little more rustling of the foliage than usual. He slowed, listening for continuing steps. There were none. Then Kairis howled. Atlas turned to see what she had found. He followed his own trail back to where she had been alongside and heard more rustling.
"Atlas!"
Her lovely voice calling his name frightened him; something inside him leaped into action, making his feet fly. The adrenaline pumped though him, making his heart race. He reached Kairis in seconds, panting because of the rush. He was relieved to find she was in no imediate danger, just . . . stuck. He stood there with his head hanging, his muscles trembling with the chemical boost.
"Well..." He panted, "seems...you're stuck."
He thought of how worried he'd been, and how it was unlike him to worry about anyone. He dismissed the feeling, the same way he did all others. He had acted on his feelings this time, something he was not in practice of doing. He vowed next time he would not be so weak, and would think thoroughly before getting so riled.
Atlas decided to simply forget about all this thinking and feeling. He made his way over and bit and the thick branches that were keeping Kairis from getting up. He snapped them fairly easily, until he came to the biggest one. It had fallen from a tree overhead, and in her attempt to go under, Kairis had gotten trapped.
"Be still," He said, eyeing the big limb. He grabbed onto to it with his teeth and planted his feet. Suddenly he threw all his weight backwards, again and again, playing tug of war with the wood. He finally succeeded in rotating it, and the dead leaves made a crashing sound as it moved aside.
"All...clear," He panted again. He shook the leaves and several thorns from a briar from his coat.
"You howled, did you find a scent?"

Stupid, stupid stupid!! she felt ashamed of herself and if wolves could face palm... she would have at that exact moment. How ridiculous was this? She was no princess that needed rescuing from a hero, Kairis was not a damsel in distress!! She looked away as Atlas stated she was stuck. Well, she already had that one figured. Kairis's vibrant green eyes looked up at the male as he ripped and tugged at the branches holding her hostage, slowly she got her mobility back and was able to breathe properly because her chest was not being compressed. There was still one large obstacle in the way that the fae was unsure about, it would be incredibly difficult to move she thought and she smiled slyly to Atlas.
Eventually he got the giant log rolled away and she was free! Kairis stood up and felt her back crack a little as she sighed and took in a breath of fresh air. "My saviour!" she joked and winked at Atlas harmlessly, it made her feel better about how embarassing that was for her and how much of a pain she must look like in the eyes of the male. "I am really sorry about that.... but I did find a sent! That is why I got stuck.... I was trying to follow it.." She stated and shifted her weight from her right to her left and Kairis let her tail give a gentle wag. Moving forwards, she scratched at the ground and lowered her nose to it, you could still pick up the sent past her, she would guess that it was a male was she wasn't too sure yet.
Keenly she was aware of how close Atlas was as he examined the sent and she stepped back feeling weak and disoriented. She had to keep it together for god's sake! She would not go all weak on herself and him when they were both counting her her professionalism to us her nose to help track down these wolves. Kairis couldn't help but gawk at him though, he was almost royal in a way, the way he held himself and his deep connection to his pack which he cared for... with a sigh the white female blinked and looked at his two tone fur again resisting the urge to nuzzle it, wondering what it felt like to be even closer to him...
Damn you heart! she growled and then quickly shut her muzzle hoping that her partner hadn't hear it. Way to make herself look crazy now isn't it?

"My saviour!" Kairis joked. Atlas was almost offended by her words; Almost. But he wasn't sure why, and so he shrugged off the comment. "I am really sorry about that.... but I did find a scent! That is why I got stuck.... I was trying to follow it.." Atlas quickly found the scent she had spoken of. A wolf . . . He was 90% sure it was a male. Not quite stale. Leading off northeast. It was a good start. Atlas was optimistic about finding all the wolves before next winter. He could go back to Argess to help with the winter hunting. They'd need all the wolves they could to surive winter, if it was anything like last year. "This is excellent," He stated. "Well done." If he didn't know these wolves it would be nearly impossible to track them like this, but his alpha had given him helpful details and likely locations, and last sightings, descriptions, home ranges, names. His alpha had been right so far. The traitors would not be expecting to be asassinated either, which was very much in his favor. The big two toned male began following the trail for several minutes, obsessed. Then he remembered about hunting and sleep. it was nearing dark. "I suppose we should hunt and sleep now." He said turning back, "This place doesnt seem too bare. I will hunt alone." He looked at Kairis, but only a glance. He looked back into the trees, not wanting the now familiar hot feeling to swarm through him again. "Do you hunt for yourself, or shall I kill for you?"

She blew out a deep breath and followed atlas curiously as he focused on the sent and trail. Her black nose twitched as she lowered her head to examine the sent she had found somewhat by accident, hmm, she flicked her tail once, than twice and trotted off again followed the brute as he paced along easily. It wasn't long though before Atlas stopped and questioned on whether or not she could hunt.
One eyebrow pricked up as she looked at the male. Of course she could hunt! Kairis felt slightly offended but let it slip passed her, the fae was sure he did not mean any misjudgment by it.
"its fine Atlas, I can hunt myself... so should we meet back here once we are done? Or do you know a den to stay in for tonight? It is getting quite dark..." the white wolf spoke and looked around with unease. She was not familiar to this part of the forest and did not know what types of predators waited for her in the dark.. Swiftly she nodded her head and trotted in the opposite direction of the male not wanting to admit she could use his company as her tail twitched with nervousness.
Grubmbling word to herself, Kairis lowered her black nose to the ground and sniffed around the bushes and under fallen trees. Stomach growling, the fae finally caught sent of a rabbit and stalked low to the ground, every muscle tense in anticapation. She sprung and managed to catch the male hare by his throat and with once bite and a few wild shakes its warm body lay limp in her jaws.

Atlas cocked his head a bit as Kairis answered.
"its fine Atlas, I can hunt myself..."
She seemed slightly put off, and Atlas detected it in her tone. He thought back to see if he'd said anything to trigger it. He supposed perhaps his way of speaking, the way they spoke in Argess, was a bit misleading to her. He had asked if she wished to hunt for herself, but to her it might've seemed he was questioning her ability. He made a note to himself to be more clear with his words.
"so should we meet back here once we are done? Or do you know a den to stay in for tonight? It is getting quite dark..."
"Yes, meet back here. We will sleep here as well, so that we may start tracking in the morning right away."
Kairis trotted off and Atlas turned and did the same. The forest was well in the grip of night by now, and Atlas was glad of it. He enjoyed hunting at night. The leaves did not help, however, and the wolf made it his mission to find some less noisy ground. He climbed upon some oddly shapped rocks and stood silent, listening to the sounds of the woods. His nose came upon an interesting smell. He moved toward the highest concentration of the wafting smell. After it became very strong, his prey drive was in full gear. He knew the smell. He paused, and listened intently. He heard tiny quick breathing, settled in the grass. Atlas tensed, every muscle coiling up for his kill bite, though he knew the hunt would be no challenge. In a blur he leaped upon the thick grassy brush and upon a fawn. His teeth slid into the fawn's throat, killing it. He had come on fawns like this before, hidden in the grass while their mother left them. He clamped onto his meal and raised his head high in order to haul it back. He crunched through the trees, not worried about the noise he made. He dragged the fawn down to their site, and settled down to work upon it. The blood smeared his white cheeks and chest as he chewed into the belly. He hoped Kairis had done as well.

Damn, Damn, damn... what I'd do to have you here.. After finishing off a meal to settle her for the night ahead and possibly an early and long morning the gentle fae slowly made her way back to there arranged meeting spot but kept her highly acute senses tuned in waiting to sent the familiar and oddly comforting sent of Atlas... Cautiously she entered the small clearing and gave a small smile to the male tracker and wagged her tail in appreciation of his company. As the night drew closer she could feel the excitment of the day starting to take its toll on her physically and mentally as she gazed at the dinner that the massive male had caught for himself and tilted her head slightly at what and easy feat it must have been for such a skilled wolf.. A short note of laughter left her muzzle as she watched him hungrily rip at its belly and noticed the blood staining the white on his muzzle and his stunning amber eyes which oddly seemed to mesh well with the mess on his face. Turning in a few circles, the female settled down with sigh and rested her head on her white paws and closed her eyes shortly only opening them when a question popped into her head that she must know or else sleep would elude her when she could use it the most. "I must ask Atlas... where is your family? I mean I know you live in your pack but what about your mother and father? or siblings... and what about your mate? she must be missing you awfully..." Kairis asked with a slight dreary note and her eyes held a look of sadness as if she could feel the sadness and pain of the unkown wolves if they even existed. With a little shift of her head she was able to rest it fully on her paws but could still keep the two toned wolf in her view and she curiously studied his face for signs of emotion... anything that could give the white fae some insight to Atlas. If they were going to work together Kairis felt as if they should get to know each other on a slightly more personal level, to her she thought it would instill the trust that one would need to fully work properly. She sneezed as a cold breeze blew over her and managed to work its way into her thickening coat and she shook with the sudden cold breeze that caught her off guard. I wish you where here...

Atlas was aware of Kairis' return at once and he nodded to her as she gave a small laugh, most likely at his messy meal, and turned in a few dainty circles before lying down, to be most comfortable. She put her head on her paws and looked very sleepy, and sort of content looking, Atlas thought. He assumed she must have found herself a filling morsel. She looked as if she eaten, and so he did not feel guilty about continuing to eat in front of her. She blinked drowsily, and even at rest she was quite possibly the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.
"I must ask Atlas..." She started. "Where is your family? I mean I know you live in your pack but what about your mother and father? or siblings... and what about your mate? she must be missing you awfully..."
Atlas looked at her quizzically, then wiped part of his muzzle on one of his forelegs.
"I was taken from my mother from an early age. I do know remember her name, nor do I care to. She was empty and distant of what I can remember, and cared little about what become of us. I have no knowledge of my father. I do have a sister, but I do not know her name, only that she resides in the pack somewhere. My brothers are members of the guard. They patrol the border. However, they each attend to their own duties, and likey do not care where I am at this moment."
His blunt answer was quite normal, and he knew that he knew more about his family than most other Argess members did. Many were cleared of any family history to ensure total loyalty to the pack and the pack only.
"Mate . . ." He said slowly after a few minutes. "No, I have no mate, and have never had one. It is forbidden. Only the Alpha is allowed to breed."
He pushed the fawn away and got up to wipe the rest of the blood from his muzzle by rubbing it in the grass. He found a spot nearby Kairis and circled a few times, as she had, before collapsing heavily and blowing out a big sigh.
"I do not have a family." He summed up. "I have a pack."

A sinking feeling filled the heart of the female as Atlas explained his situation. The worst part of it was it didn't seem to phase him, like... it was normal to be so distant from family. To Kairis, it went against all things that was pack was suposed to be like. A pack is family, not a group of killers that obediently bow down to their alpha without question. What makes a true pack strong is the bond between them all. Kairis sighed and wondered if she should say what was on her mind or if it would be better to keep it to herself. She decided on the latter and yawned widely causing her ears to twitch back and forth before she curled into a ball and settled in for sleep. The carcass of the deer felt warm and familiar in her nostrils and the meal in her belly had made the fae very content... and Atlas made her feel safe, like she didn't always have to be watching her back for dangers. Company was oh so very good for her. "Atlas, you do know your pack is very odd, right?" she stated more than asked with a slight and delicate laugh. before sifting her weight from one hip to the other and laying her head on her paws looking intently at the male wolf. She thought to herself how odd he was, but at the same time she wondered if she was as good for him as he was for her? Would Kairis end up providing something for the male like he was for her? Or would she just be veiwed as another worker, another nose to help in the search? With a snort she squeezed her eyes shut and scolded herself for even caring in the first place. How sad was she? thinking these types of questions when she hardly knew the wolf? "Goodnight Atlas," She said and gracefully nodded her fhead in a gesture of respect and kindness before tucking into a ball using her tail to coverr her dark pigmented nose from the cold. Looking at her, she resembled a mound of snow, which would be quite useful when winter rolled around. **************************************************** About halfway through the night, Kairis was awoken by the sharp stinging of the cold that bit through her coat and she found herself shaking uncontrolably as she tried to get herself back to sleep which was not very sucsessful. Lifting her head up she blinked a couple of times before seeing Atlas asleep and her mind imediately sought out the fact that he was heat, warmth in the cold. Carefully she rose and stalked forwards quietly until she was fairly close to Atlas before she layed down again praying that she would not wake the two toned wolf up since she did not know what his reaction would be, especially if she startled him. Ever so slowly she inched forwards on her belly until she was almost touching the larger wolf and she could feel the heat coming off his body so she decided to curl up next to the wolf and if you looked closely you could find a content smile of her muzzle. "You are very warm Atlas.." She whispered though not loud enough to wake him if he was still sleeping.

Atlas looked as Kairis stated in so many words, that his pack was odd. The question did not require an answer and Atlas put his head back down to sleep as she bid him goodnight. He had an idea that the way his pack ran was not normal, but perhaps he was not entirely aware of how abnormal it really was. Not having expierienced any other kind of living, how was he to know? He was keenly aware of how much being around Kairis was making him doubt himself. But he felt completely sure nothing could change his mind.
In his sleep, Atlas dreamed. In his dreams, he was a different wolf. Of course, having no control over dreams, he was the wolf He subconciously wanted to be, the wolf he should've been. He bounded through his dream of wildflowers with his tongue hanging, breathing in all the wonderful smells. Snow began to fall, and when he turned, snow covered the ground. He quivered a little in the cold. A white wolf came over the hill. Atlas thought she was beautiful.
"Come," He said. But she did not. "Please, come," He said again, But she couldn't, for there was a large bottomless pit seperating them. Atlas ran back and forth, but there was no way around it. He quickly decided that the only way to reach her, would be to jump over. He placed himself a few yards back, then flung himself over the pit. He fell onto the edge of other side, barely making it across. He got up and pranced up to the white wolf, who smiled at him. She embraced him, and he snuggled her as well.
"You are very warm Atlas..."
As Kairis inched closer to Atlas, and whispered, he stirred, but he was not awake. He was deep inside his dream. But all the same, he curled toward her, and nuzzled his nose into the brush of her tail.
When Atlas awoke, he yawned widely and let out a contented breath. As he noticed his surroundings, His eyes widened. He was closely curled next to Kairis. He softly and delicately got up. He sat several feet away, puzzled and slightly shocked. He had no earthly idea how they had ended up in such a way. Maybe she hadn't noticed. He wouldn't mention it. Right now, they needed to get moving.
"Time to go," He said, and stood nearby her. "Are you awake?"

Kairis was slowly awakened by the cold that seeped into her coat from the space where Atlas had been in the early morning. Flicking her ears back forth she sented the air without moving or opening her eyes. It was when she hear the males voice that Kairis opened each eye slowly and yawned wide showing all her white teeth and her pink tounge flopped out of her mouth briefly as she shook her head from the morning sleepiness.
"Morning Atlas," Kairis stated as she stretched each of her limbs starting with bowing and ending with stretching out each back leg before shaking her light shaded coat from the dirt and debris it had collected when she slept on the ground. The fae couldn't help but keep a smile from her muzzle as she looked at Atlas and thought about how warm he was, it nearly made her laugh but instead she just looked the opposite direction pretending to be interested in whatever was in the trees beyond her, where the sent trail led.
The trail. Kairis quickly focused on why she was even with the large, solider like wolf in the first place and she dropped her black nose to the ground and was able to pick up the sent of the wolf that was slightly fainter than it was yesterday. It was fading and that thought made her frown a bit, they would have to move quickly if they had hope of staying on track. Grumbling, she turned and walked past the two toned brute to the eaten deer carcass and started chewing on a rib bone, holding it firmly between her paws. She knew that it wasn't much but since she was a wolf in fairly ok shape, it would tie her over for the day until they both had a chance to hunt again. She licked her muzzle contently and waited for the males orders on when to move on, she wss ready to go if he was.

Kairis shook and stretched very elegantly, and told Atlas good morning. She did not seem to know about the cuddly sleeping arangement, and she didnt mention it. Atlas was glad. She sniffed around, then walked past him to chew on the fawn carcass. Atlas was still full himself, and did not bother her for any. She looked at him expectantly for the lead.
"Let's get going. There's alot of ground to cover. I want to find this wolf by tonight."
He did not know if they would find the mystery wolf by that time, but he wanted desperatly to try. He was beginning to feel unproductive. He wasn't feeling successful at his assigned task, and it made him feel restless and more determined.
The trail was picked up again, and they started out as they had been before, parallel to each other, and about 25 lengths apart. Kairis kept up just as she had the day before. They travelled for hours, and at about noon, Atlas caught the wolf's scent and found it much sharper. He called for Kairis to stop. He trotted around the area, with his nose in the leaves, utterly focused.
"The trail is as plain as day now," He said. "This wolf doesnt travel very fast. There's no need to travel far apart anymore for now, we can follow this easily."
Atlas led the way forward in a wolf lope, occasionally putting his nose to the leaves. He thought of nothing but the trail and went on and on, for hours. He looked back every so often to make sure Kairis was keeping up, which she was. He imediately went back to tracking.
Finally, when sunset was just about to end, Atlas stopped. He was panting heavily, the steamy breath floating around his face. He stared ahead, his eyes wide with anticipation.
"There," He said to Kairis. "He's up there, just beyond that little ridge of trees. I can smell him."
Atlas was not completely positive that this wolf was one of the traitors that Alpha Benik had instructed him to kill, but he was desperate to find someone, and to question them if nothing else. He turned quietly to Kairis.
"I have to confront him. It could be dangerous if he is aggressive. I think you should wait nearby."
Atlas would not admit it, but he felt very protective of Kairis. It was a deep rooted instinctive feeling. He knew that if the mystery wolf tried attacking Kairis, He would kill him, whether he was a traitor or not.
