Solitaire nodded.
"It's a good distaste to have." She said. "Storms aren't good for den-less wolves such as us."
She heaved her own rump out of the muck, but it was futile to try and clean her paws, as they would immediately return to the mud. She yawned widely, her pink tongue curling. She could see Sparrow was tired too. His paws were suctioned in the mud. "Help?" he said.
"No worries," Solitaire said. She squashed over to Sparrow and positioned herself on his side. She grasped the nape of his neck gently with her teeth and tugged on his upper body. His front feet came free, but they both fell backwards and scrambbled to get back up. They were now both very muddy, but no longer stuck.
"We should find some place to sleep . . . somewhere sort of dry."
She began gaging the possibilities. A rock outcropping or under a tree would do nicely, but a dry spot seemed unprobbable. Sparrow had found the tree, which had been a pretty good idea. Maybe he would have another stroke of genius.
"Any ideas on where to sleep Sparrow?"

"It's a good distaste to have. Storms aren't good for den-less wolves such as us." Solitaire said.
Sparrow sighed, but couldn't argue with her logic. "Yeah, that's true. But I still kind of like lightening- wish I could see those kinds of lights without worrying about the wind blowing me off my feet."
The female helped him out of the mud and Sparrow grunted as his back hit the ground. Paws flailing in the air, he shook them out before rolling onto his feet again. "Thanks, 'Taire." Said female replied in kind and intelligently offered that they find some kind of shelter.
Sparrow shook his small body vigorously before instinctively bringing his tongue out to clean the rest of the fresh mud. He took a lick and immediately spit it out, disgusted and embarressed. After suppressing the urge to gag, he straightened himself up and silently thanked Solitaire for having her back turned.
"Any ideas on where to sleep, Sparrow?" For a moment, the little male felt honored she would ask- then his brain kicked in and his mind began coming up with various possibilities. He began to mentally seperate and down-size the options and did so while taking notes of his surroundings by sight and smell.
His slightly underdeveloped senses picked up old tracks- mostly small animals, but none that would have a home big enough for two wolves. Sparrow's thoughts went back to the tree; the little wolf had heard his mother telling stories of great cats that dwelled in trees, and slept all day and night with their legs and tails hanging contently as they rested on branches. It sounded nice, but Sparrow was unsure if they could even stay on a branch for very long- much less lie down on it comfortably. He sighed.
"I don't know. Maybe we should keep moving?" His voice still sounded odd, and cracked a little more than he liked. After a little more thinking, he began to feel heavier- and not just because his fur was wet. "I think I'm a little tired though. I don't know if I can travel very far- I haven't really been eating quite well enough for that. Perhaps we should just stay here?" he inquired. "But... if you like, you could always just move on... without me."
((Ran out of ideas xD. Stay there?))

"Without you?!" Solitaire yelped. "Never." The black and white wolf-dog washed the pup's face. He was tired. She turned, looking in all directions, her ears turning like radars.
"Come on Sparrow, just a short walk and we'll stop, I promise."
She trotted ahead, hoping to find something suitable quickly. Trees and trees and more trees. None offered much in the way of dry places. All the dirt under them was turned to un-appealing mud. Then she spotted a large rock. The top was sort of flat. Better than sleeping in the mud. She wagged her tail and leaped around in a circle, her old joyful self making an appearance. The departure of the storm had significantly affected her mood. She trotted back to tired Sparrow, her rump wiggling a bit.
"I found a good place, come see!" She kissed his nose and trotted back to the rock. It was black with the rain, but it was not as soaked as the ground. She hopped up on it, surveying the amount of space they had. It would be cramped if they slept seperately, but if they didn't mind being a bit tangled with each other it would do nicely. She flopped down for a moment then got back up. They would probably be covered in their own mud come morning, but that was better than being covered in their mud and mud from the ground. She looked around at the turf. Good place for rabbits and squirrels, she'd probobly be able to catch one tomorrow for their breakfast. She yawned herself.
"Think this will do Sparrow? It's comfortable . . . for a rock." She smirked.
The clouds had cleared out by now revealing a beautiful moon and shimmering stars. How lovely, thought Solitaire. Too bad all I really want to do is close my eyes.

Sparrow had never quite gone a night without sleep so the feeling of drowsiness kept doubling with each minute he sat.
Solitaire returned, and her words were a blur as the little wolf yawned. He subconsciously began to drag himself after her fleeting body, and soon spotted the big rock that must have gotten his companion so excited.
Immediately as his body loomed over enough of the rock, Sparrow's small figure collapsed into a heap. He rolled over with a yawn- asleep before he even hit the ground. He didn't hear Solitaire's next words, but smiled as he felt the warmth her body gave while pressed against his back.
(D'AW, CUTE MOMENT, MUST DRAW)

Solitaire awoke later than usual, having been more tired than usual. She yawned widely, her pink tongue curling. Sparrow still slept and she didn't wake him. She stood up quietly and hopped silently off the sleeping rock. She stretched deeply with a bow then leaned forward stretching her back legs. She did a little grooming, and found herself frowning. Her usual bright white patches were dingy and mud stained. Summer was an ugly season. Shedding and mud-stains did not suit the wolf-dog. Winter, with all its lovely snow to wipe and wash the mess away, was much better. Until it melted. The big rain had washed away most of the remaining snow.
Solitaire decided on breakfast. She nosed around for several yards looking for food, any food. The rains had welcomed some new opportunities. The worms had come up, making the birds sing more than usual. Solitaire knew bugs were not always a good food source, but earthworms could be. She rooted a bit until she clamped one. It did not taste particularly bad, but not delicious either. She sniffed out a mole tunnel and stood over it, listening for sounds of life inside. She heard him shuffling and digging and tore into the ground towards the sound. It took persistance, but she snapped the mole up, her teeth breaking it. Solitaire set it aside and strode though some nearby tall grass looking for trails. She happened upon a nest of baby feild mice. They were not very much, but were better than nothing.
She crossed back along she and Sparrow's trail, finding faint scents neat their dancing spot. She panted a smile, remembering their fun. She tracked along the bank of the still frozen water, but the only trail she caught was a beaver's. The wolf-dog went back for the mole, which was rather fat, and trotted back to give it to Sparrow, who was probably awake by now.

Sparrow heard shuffling, and the warmth from his back disappeared. He sniffled and pryed an eye open to watch Solitaire follow after a scent. For a moment, his heart skipped as he thought she was leaving him, then he realized she was most likely searching for breakfast.
As Soli disappeared behind a wall of trees, Sparrow decided it was best to get up, himself. He stretched himself out like a cat would and heard a few cracks before shaking himself off.
He scratched at a spot below his neck and yawned tirely. "Hm..." he thought, "what to do now?" He could go hunting, but it appeared that Solitaire was already doing that. Although it seemed wrong to let her do all the work... Sparrow lifted his nose to discover the scent of a squirrel. He was quite fast, but then again, he was also kind of clumsy.
"Hmph, I can catch that!" he argued with his logic. Grinning, Sparrow stalked towards the close scent and heard a creature scurrying. As he hid behind a bush to the left of the squirrel, he raised his haunches and prepared to pounce. However, his tail unintentionally hit a thin bramble and he froze as it snapped and fell to the ground. The squirrel stopped. Then...
Sparrow leapt out from behind the bush as fast as he could, one of his paws managed to hit the squirrel off it's feet, but it had already rolled over and begun to run. Pumping his legs, Sparrow chased after it, often having to dodge rocks and small logs and branches. He started to close in on the squirrel when suddenly it wasn't running in front of him anymore. Slamming his hind legs into the dirt and locking his legs in place, Sparrow came to an abrupt stop and watched as the squirrel taunted him from atop a tree.
It chittered and he responded with a growl and a series of barks. He placed his forelegs on the tree's trunk and watched without satisfaction as it scrambled to a higher branch, chittering furiously.
Sparrow growled and gave up, knowing that despite the fact that he'd managed to struggle on to a tree last night, he would not be able to climb this Maple tree. And as he raised his nose once more, he could not find any prey which he would be able to catch. Simply birds high off the ground, a distant mole, and a small snake wrapped up in a tree somewhere.
As he wandered back to the rock he and Solitaire had slept on last night, Sparrow hung his head and awaited his friend's return- hoping she had some success where he failed.

Solitaire loped the remaining distance back to the sleeping rock and saw Sparrow, quite awake and looking rather glum. She assumed he'd done the same as she had, and looked around for something to eat. She trotted up with her tail in the air and the fat mole in her mouth. She laid it on the rock and licked her teeth free of fur.
"Gotcha this," She said. "It's not a lot, but it will do for now."
She gave her coat a big shake, spraying water. She was still damp from the night before, and pouncing through the tall wet grass had made her soggy.
"I found a worm and some mice, and a beaver trail, but that's about it."
She sat down and scratched her ear with her muddy back paw, making her ear muddy too.
"Ugh," She fretted. "I look just terrible. Wet, muddy-" She turned and nibbled on her back then sat up with a clump of hair in her mouth. "-and shedding."
She shook her head again, and wiped her blue eye on her foreleg.
"Did you manage to find anything edible?" She asked.

Sparrow lifted his head to see the beautfiful wolf-dog come loping back towards him, a mole in her mouth, and her tail in the air. She looked very proud- and dare he say, rather majestic, as well. Despite the mud, Solitaire still seemed to shine in his eyes.
Sparrow turned his head away in slight embarrassment, but quickly lost his his train of thought as he realized what was in her mouth: food! Solitaire laid the mole on to the rock and Sparrow's tail began wagging and he felt a slight drool. He quickly ran his tongue over his chops and resisted biting it. "I found a worm and some mice, and a beaver trail but that's about it." "Oh, so she'd eaten? Good!"
Sparrow gratefully nuzzled her before ironically wolfing down the mole. He looked almost desperate and pitiful with ribs sticking out like bristled fur, and a mangy coat. But his eyes were warm and full of kindness, and his mouth currently filled with gratefullnes. (OOC: Is that a word? xD) Sparrow thought himself very fortunate to have come upon Solitaire, and was even more glad that she was as good of a hunter as friend.
Once he finished eating half of the mole, he reluctantly pushed it away- having already gained the knowledge through experience that if you haven't eaten a lot for a long time, you risk death by suddenly feasting. He shuddered at the memory of sitting and waiting for his travel partner to finish his meal, so he could pick at the remains. But watching the next day, as the old wolf fell to the ground with a terrible stomach ache, and did not close his eyes, nor breath.
"Ugh," Solitaire's voice sounded. Sparrow took his eyes off the tempting, half-eaten food and turned to look at his companion. "I look just terrible! Wet, muddy... and shedding!" Sparrow laughed whole-heartedly, "I think you look beau-." Akwardly looking away and biting his tongue, he turned back to her and quickly molded his words into something else. "I think you look full of benevolence." He mentally facepalmed. "full of benevolence?! What?!"
Sparrow suprressed a groan, and gave his biggest grin to cover the awkwardness he felt inside.

Solitaire twitched her ears at Sparrow's first bit of speech. She perked up as he seemed to rewind and start over.
"I think you look full of benevolence."
She smiled carefully quirking her brows. ((OCC: I just made that up, but i like how it sounds. Quirky.))
"Uh, thanks!"
It was an odd compliment, but a compliment just the same. Her dog mother had passed on to her daughter a glad heart and a joy from praise. She pranced gracefully over to Sparrow with her muddy feet, and gave him a kiss on the muzzle.
The wolf dog then snuffled around the area surrounding the rock looking for anything else. Solitaire was only just two years old, and the thought of mating had not quite occured to her before, but now, something about it nibbled at her, like a flea.
She had never known any other males besides her father and brothers and now, Sparrow. She knew what mating was, but it was in fact, a scary concept to her. She knew about love, but exactly how strong was love? It didnt keep her mother from dying. It didnt keep her father from sending her on her way, alone. What would stop it from doing more of those things to her? She stopped in her tracks and looked back at Sparrow, her insides tingling. Love? Yes, she loved Sparrow. She admitted that to herself. But could he know of this love? Would she admit it to him? Was it a romantic love, or a doubtless friend's love? Solitaire knew not.
All of her inner turmoil likely showed on her face. She snapped from it and smiled feebly before turning away. Her battle with emotion and thoughts was not over, and she knew deep down it never would be.
((OCC: whoa, man . . . deep.))

Solitaire quickly perked her ears.
"I'm fine Sparrow, just great." She smiled at him again, more genuinely this time, and trotted to the edge of the big water. She busied herself with cracking the thin spots of ice, and lapping up water. She thought Sparrow might be thirsty too.
"Sparrow!" She called, loud enough for him to hear, "Come and drink!"
She went back to placing her front paws on the ice and slamming down on them, to break them. She succeeded in making a nice circle to drink out of. The water was ice cold, and hit her stomach hard, but she was thirsty. There had of course been plenty of puddles to drink from, but all of them seemed muddy and gritty. She much preffered the cleaner clearer water of the lake.
She then decided she would give the icy water bowl one more good smack for good measure. She rose up on her hind legs and came down in the usual fashion, but the angle was wrong. She came down on the edge of the ice, near a jagged shard, and as her paw met it, the solid water cut deep between her toes. Solitaire yelped and leaped back from the water to get out of danger. Little did she know that the danger now came from the ground she walked on. If dirt and debris were to find their way into the wound, she would develop an infection. Luckily the cut was clean and sharp. She lay over and began licking the blood from her paw, hoping this mistake would not lead to anything worse.

Solitaire reassured Sparrow that she was fine, but he still felt skeptical. However, he decided that if she didn't want to talk about it, it leave it at that. He looked at her smile and returned it with his own, but couldn't mask the bit of concern. He watched her trot off to the Winter Lake and start breaking the ice. Sparrow couldn't help but marvel at the ice's determination through out even the hottest Summers. His train of thought broke quickly at the sound of Solitaire's voice: "Sparrow, come drink!" His tongue ran over the roof of his mouth and he realized just how thirsty he was. Trotting after her, Sparrow scanned his eyes over the lake and found a spot near Solitaire that had thinner ice. He walked over and reared slightly to make it break. Since the water was shallow, his tongue picked up little bits of mud here and there. As he lapped the cold water, Sparrow felt himself shudder and twitched a little at the icy feeling. Sparrow was grateful for the mole he had eaten from earlier, because if the cold water were to hit the empty pit of his stomach, he wouldn't have been able to drink it without throwing up. Suddenly from the corner of his eye, he noticed Solitaire rear back and slam her paws into the ice that sheltered more water. He was admiring her strength when he jumped at the sound of her yelping. Quickly raising his wet muzzle from the water, he shook his head and called out, "Solitaire! Are you alright? What happened?" He walked a couple steps over and caught on to the small scent of fresh blood. He lowered his neck to examine her injured paw. "Ouch..." he murmured. Solitaire leaned down to lick at her paw, and Sparrow understood her need to keep it off the ground. He nuzzled her gently, wanting to help feeling to shy to offer. "Do you see anything stuck in it? If there's ice, It'd be best to get it out." [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Solitaire held her paw up, watching bright crimson drops leak from it. Sparrow had heard her yelp and had hurried over, asking hat had happened. He saw for himself and commented on what a pain it must be. She lay down to wash it carefully. Sparrow nuzzled her. "Do you see anything stuck in it? If there's ice, It'd be best to get it out."She smiled up at him, sighing. "It's not too bad, i've melted the ice with my tongue. It's a clean cut, so it will heal pretty quickly. I should've been more careful. But I'd like to keep washing it, til' it stops bleeding."She set upon the task of stopping the bleeding, pulling her soft pink tongue over her right paw pad. The blood dripping ceased after a few minutes, and Solitaire got up. The cut still throbbed, and she knew better than to walk on it. She held it up, and hopped back down the little trail led back to their sleeping rock. She was able to get back up on to it and lay down. "I'm afraid we'll have to be hungry the rest of the day. I don't think i'll be able to hunt til' tomorrow."She looked softly at Sparrow. "I'm sorry, Sparrie. I know you're hungry."

Sparrow smiled gratefully for the clean cut, and followed her with a small trot as she sat upon the rock. "I'm afraid we'll have to be hungry the rest of the day. I don't think i'll be able to hunt til' tomorrow." His eyes widened sadly as his stomach growled. There was still half the mole left... but it would never satisfy two wolves. "I'm sorry, Sparrie. I know you're hungry." Sparrow grinned at the name but it fell as he saw the sadness in Solitaire's eyes. Her beautiful... blue eyes...
The wolf shook his head and looked away, biting his tongue to keep from spilling compliments out. He distracted himself with the thought of food. That could be a problem. They should probably keep moving, too. They're scents were building up in the place, and Sparrow didn't think they would be fit enough to fight any predators that might see them as meals.
He straightened himself up and stared with determination into the forestry ahead. "I'll get us some food. You finish that mole, and no objections. I'll be a while," he said bravely. Not waiting for a response, the male trotted into the woodland and sharpened his nose on the many scents that clouded the area.
Birds... a skunk, yuck... a squirrel... Sparrow growled at the thought of his earlier, failed hunt. Wait, Solitaire mentioned a beaver. He followed after the female's scents until he caught on to his target's fishy smell. He began to follow it until he came accross a fat riverbend that held a magnificent pile of wood.
Sparrow forgot to exhale, and when he did, it was when his burning lungs reminded him. What a magnificent creature to have built such a... beautiful contraption... He tilted his head, unsure of what it was, but understood that it blocked most of the water from going past it and into Winter Lake. "No wonder this river isn't covered in ice," he muttered.
Instantly, Sparrow realized his mistake as his sharp ears caught onto the sound of a gutteral chittering. He looked towards where it came from and his hazel eyes met those of the beavers. The creature immediately booked it.
Sparrow caught up to it in no time with his light weight and long legs. He felt a small pang in his heart when he snapped his jaws shut, but only caught air. He was surprised when his instincts took hold of him and swerved his course just enough to miss a long branch coming out of the beaver's den. It took him a couple mileseconds of staring to understand that the beaver had probably gone into it's dam.
Sparrow sighed, ready to give up when he remembered Solitaire's sad eyes. He growled softly and turned to the beaver dam again. Gulping air, he jumped into the river, and found that his feet easily touched the bottom. Well... that was until it hit a slope and he had to swim to keep himself surfaced.
Sparrow sniffed around and dived after the beaver's murky and lost scent. He opened his eyes, delighted at the fact that it didn't sting and the water was clear enough to see atleast a couple feat ahead. His hazel eyes grew hard as he followed after the brown, retreating figure, and found himself surfacing into the dam itself!
Gasping for air and shaking his head, Sparrow hulled himself into the dam and grinned at the cornered beaver. It chittered and began to move a couple sticks. The wolf's ears bent back, no way was this rodent going to escape. Sparrow leapt up and closed his jaws onto the beaver's fat neck, biting hard to make sure the death was quick. His heart sank as he heard it's squeel and closed his eyes to ignore it. However something he couldn't ignore was the taste of warm blood running down his throat, and the great sense of pride he felt for having persued his prey and catching it.
The lean male clamped his jaws firmly over it's neck and jumped out of the dam and back into the water. He surfaced just in time to spit the beaver out onto land and sputter for air. His eyes widened at the sight of a raccoon and briefly wondered if they ate beavers. Sparrow decided he didn't want to find out and quickly raised himself out of the water to stand over his hunt. He growled proudly and the raccoon hissed before running off.
Sparrow trotted back to Solitaire soaking wet, head held high, and with food dangling from his jaws.

Solitaire's face twisted a bit with shock as Sparrow took charge. It was quite inspiring to see the resolve in his face as he marched off to hunt. She was worried about him going alone, but she reminded herself that he had been on his own before. She felt too anxious to eat, but she felt if she didn't Sparrow would be questioning why. And he had said 'no objections'. So, she ate it. She continued looking in the direction he gone for about an hour. She washed her foot some, then kept watch. She made an ultimatum with herself, that if he didn't return by the time her shadow was long, she would go looking for him. But no sooner than she made the decision, she saw the little caramel wolf, trotting back towards her though the trees, soaking, and carrying a beaver. "Sparrow! You're amazing!"She leapt down from the rock and immediatly jerked her foot from the ground. She nuzzled him and bounced, or tried her best to bounce on three legs. Her excitment couldn't be hidden, despite her paw. Her tail curled. "How did you catch such a big brute? Oh, it doesnt matter, I guess. What matters is you're amazing!"She made a few playful yaps, and hopped around, singing a song, looking very much like a puppy. "Sparrow, Sparrow, he's a retriever, He'll go out, and get you a beaver!"
