The large, silvery brute hobbled from his den, his jaws gaping, pink tongue curling with a dreary yawn. He bent his front down, pushing out his long legs and stretching each toe. He pulled himself back up and shook the dirt free from his coat, then proceeded towards the mound off cliffs that led up to the dens and down to the ground. He made his way down carelessly, knowing each and every rock and thus no longer needed to be alert on his descent. Along with the dens and the cliffs surrounding them, Caspian knew every inch of his territory. As the alpha, he had to be aware of every hoof and wing that quivered in his land, as well as every ferocious fang. Without such knowledge, he and his mate, whom was just as skilled as he, would never be able to allow their three young pups to romp in the meadows with any peace of mind.
A smile pried open the large male’s lips as his three, joyful fuzzballs tumbled towards him, shoving each other in an attempt to get to their sire first. He chuckled and pawed at the fluffy pups as they jumped up on him and licked the underside of his chin in true pup behavior. Their squeals and yips and desperate attempts to ‘tackle him down’ were undeniable, so Caspian, with a smirk, dramatically fell to his feat, rolling on his stomach and letting his tongue hang out of his mouth.
It was all he had not to laugh as three tiny jaws dropped, and three squeaky voices shouted about their father’s death. After he thought they had suffered enough, Caspian lunged at the nearest, lightly chomping down on his tail. The small puppy yelped and kicked at his father, growling in such a pathetic way Caspian couldn’t help but smile. With a tired sigh, Caspian released the tortured pup and planted his rump abruptly on the mossy ground. He raised one eyebrow and lowered the other, tilting his head and giving his eldest daughter ‘the look’ as she picked on her younger brother for being such a wimp. She quickly quieted down but didn’t cease to glare at the smaller male.
With a yawn, Caspian cast a glance up at the cliffs, waiting for his mate to emerge. And perhaps today, their guest, a previously near-death victim of human fire-arms on the road to recovery, would feel healthy enough to accompany the family. Though he knew little about the young male, he could feel that the true-hearted wolf would not mean harm to his offspring. But in the same sense, he still had to maintain being an over-protective, first-time father attitude.
